It has been years since I read this book, which was written for college classroom use, but I still think often of its helpful approach. In collaboration with their students, the authors examined student and professional writing while asking the question, "Is this good writing? If so, what are the qualities that make it good?" The result is a balanced understanding of the varieties of literary quality, the many ways, even contradictory ways, in which writing can be good. I'm a professional writer and don't usually read textbooks for pleasure. This one was worth the investment of my time. --- Bruce Holland Rogers, author of The Keyhole Opera
