Enlightening and Eye-opening: A Valuable Tool for Self-Discovery
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
This is a book for anyone seeking to better understand their partner or themselves. It is definitely not just for women who want to understand their mates. While this book could be a valuable tool of self-discovery for almost anyone, it is specifically geared for men and primarily addresses the unique trials and tribulations they face. What stood out for me were the real-life interviews, which are valuable beyond belief! I can see the lives and personalities of the men in my life reflected in the stories of the men in this book. Their accounts are open, honest, and completely unrestrained. They offer such valuable insight into the pressures and duties of being a man. Each chapter in the book addresses a different relationship: Men and work, men and their friendships, men and love, men and sex, etc. Every chapter begins with a short personality quiz that aims to identify the type of man you or your partner are with respect to these relationships. The quizzes are magnificent at making each chapter completely accessible, relatable, and even interactive. Shoshanna summarizes each chapter with "Touchstones to Remember" - her way of recapping the important aspects of each chapter. This useful little tool does wonders to filter out the most important messages from the chapters and testimonials. While the interviews work very effectively to make each chapter applicable, Shoshanna's writing tends to be abstract and difficult to relate to. The "Touchstones to Remember" are where the real gems of this book lie - easy to understand and straightforward. What He Can't Tell You is unfortunately very heteronormative. This book focuses on the struggles of heterosexual men. While this book is invaluable for heterosexual men and women, it may not be as useful for non-heterosexual individuals. Overall, however, this book was an enlightening, eye-opening.

This book changed my life

As a man, I rarely read self-help books and even more rarely read books on popular psychology/male issues. But this book came highly recommended, and so I read it, and couldn't put it down. It is probably the most profound, insightful relationship book I've ever read. I learned all about different types of men (I didn't even know so many types exist!), found out more about myself, about others, and about our relationships to women. Not only do I feel more enlightened, but I know this is a book I can really use. I have never encountered anything like it before, and highly recommend to men and women. This book changed my life.
