Best Weight Loss/Optimal Health Book Available Hands Down

Dr. Warren Willey's book is by far the best book for anyone looking to loose weight, put on muscle, or get off your medications that your poor health has got you on. I love the fact that this is not a fad diet or one that will cause your weight to yoyo. This program actually shows you how food is a drug and if used properly you can maxamize muscle gain or maintain muscle mass all while loosing fat mass, and you do it by eating normal foods. No supplements, bars, drinks, or crazy drugs, just normal healthy food. He teaches how to eat not what. So may diets today focus on "scale weight" and Dr. Willey shows you how that can be very harmful as it is much easier to loose muscle than fat so the scale goes down but you loose muscle. Dr. Willey's book also teaches that muscle is you metabolic engine, the more you have the more calories you burn and visa versa. That is why so many people bounce back to their previous weight or higher after a diet, they killed their metabolism! I am a professional triathlon coach and initially sought out this book to maximize my own body composition and I strongly recommend it to all my athletes regardless of if they want to drop 5 pounds of fat and put on 10 pounds of muscle or to my 250 pound female athlete that is training to just finish a sprint distance triathlon. Whatever you health goals are this book will help you reach them! Thank you Dr. Willey!

Great Book

Just like Better Than Steroids, this book is to the point and easy to follow. I was impressed with the quick response I received from Dr. Willey when I had questions. Very satisfied this this book and the other.

Straightforward facts, painless to implement

I am a practicing surgeon and enjoyed reading Dr. Willey's book. His approach to weight loss is based on sound biochemical as well as medical principles. Rather than focusing on diet methods that require difficult to follow meal plans, starvation, total food group avoidance, etc., Dr. Willey emphasizes lifestyle changes that are easier to follow and adhere to, and do not lead to organ system breakdown and overload---things that are all-too- commonplace with certain popular fad diets. Reading his book gives one the opportunity to not only learn the proper foods to eat, but probably more importantly, the correct timing of meals and exercise to allow safe, effective and lasting weight loss and total body fitness. His diet plans and teachings allow all people willing to participate the opportunity to regain self-respect, self-esteem and to see amazing results without trying dietary restrictions that leave people looking for the next 'miracle diet'. Proper application of good eating habits as well as tolerable exercise regimens allow all readers the ability to safely achieve their weight loss and fitness goals, while still being able to have 'vacation days' and not give up all favorite snacks. I personally agree with the lessons learned by reading this insightful book and highly recommend it to all those who seek a very achievable level of fitness and health. Dr. Willey practices what he preaches!!!!!!

Easiest Application for Weight Loss

I am a nurse practitioner and work in a primary care setting. I have several weight loss patients who are looking for inexpensive, practical, solutions to manage their weight, improve blood pressure control, improve diebetes control, and boost their energy. Dr. Willey has producted the easiest application of an optimal health program that I have read. He has a very talented ability of integrating cutting-edge medicine with inexpensive, applicable eating plans. I give his book to each of my weight loss patients and review specific chapters like "Develop and Understanding of Food" and "Food Timing" at their follow-up visits. My patients who apply his teachings to their eating styles report that they drop dress sizes and reduce waiste lines. They report improved energy levels, better sleeping patters, and lose weight. I have noted improvements in their blood pressure, blood glucose control, body composition and the less need for medications, etc. It is a health care providers dream! The book is written for the public, not the medical community. It is easy to understand and apply. It is a must read for health care providers and anyone wanting to maximize their health!

Perspective of a Doctor Who also is a Bodybuilder

Dr. Warren Willey's book is based not only on science but also on his experiences, both as a doctor (DO - an osteopathic doctor) of patients (many of whom are bodybuidlers or powerlifters) and his own experience as an amateur bodybuilder. He puts forward a model of the personal responsibility of each person to control pro-actively his or her own diet, exercise, and life-style choices. Part of this responsibility includes regular check-ups by one's physician but the primary responsibility for health lies with the individual as a responsible adult - not with the doctor who often must deal with the dysfunctions of bad life-style choices. However for the responsible adult to be able to control his or her own health each individual needs to be able to make informed decisions about diet, exercise, and habits - and this book provides precisely that kind of information to help the health-conscious man or woman achieve their goals of body weight, body composition, strength conditioning and/or aerobic fitness. His section on diet is informed by studies of ketogenic diets (the Atkins diet is one form of ketogenic diet) but prescribes a cyclic approach in which carbohydrates are consumned in the morning and replaced by protein and fat sources as the day advances. Also he recommends a cycling pattern in which several days of high protein consumption are followed by a day with more emphasis on carbohydrates to replenish the glycogen stores needed for energy for sustained workouts. In this book Dr. Willey includes several diet plans based on different beginning bodyweights in which he lays out a daily plan for the timing of meals, listing different food sources, their individual portions by weight or number of items. He makes a distinction between "active carbs" - those which have high caloric value, such as starches and sugary foods, and "free carbs" those with low caloric value but which are usually high in vitamins, anti-oxidents, and fiber, which can be consumed without much weight gain - as as broccoli, cauliflower, and the like. The book explains in simple terms the problems of metabolism that cause aging adults to tend to put on more fat than lean mass (even if their body-weight does not appear to increase) and points out strategies of exercise, diet, and life-style choices that will contribute to maintaining lean body mass, preventing obesity, and maintaining both strength and cardio-vascular endurance even as the adult passes into middle-age and older. While Willey discourages smoking and high alcohol intake he points out some strategies to allow moderate alcohol intake with less negative impact on weight gain. For those considering Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) he includes an informed discussion of the benefits and potential risks of HRT, which is always presented as an adjunct to self-discipline in diet, exercise, and habits - not as a substitute for a disciplined healthy life-style.
