This handsome, sturdy reference work serves up the words of Jesus on an A-to-Z thematic basis with a simple, serviceable intro to each citation under the rubric of 'setting'. The result is a highly accessible compendium to Jesus' words, neither illuminated nor obscured by commentary, with just enough context to establish their environment. It would be difficult not to be grateful for such a sourcebook. My only concern is that the book will be used outside of an adequate canonical context in the way of 'red letter editions' of the Bible. Whether intended or not, such works are frequently used by Christians who will privilege the presumed 'true words of Jesus' in a way that lowers the New Testament's (to say nothing of the entire Bible's) full-orbed witness. To do so runs counter to the canonical discernment of the Church, which refuses the option of relegating, say, Paul's or John's reflections to a secondary level of authority and/or relevance. Such a practice can hardly be laid at the feet of this book's editor. Still, this reviewer would urge Mr. Price and his publisher to launch a preemptive strike against the potential aberration by producing a companion volume entitled 'What does Paul say about ...' and another entitled 'What would John say about .... Meanwhile, this work serves as what my military friends might call a 'force multiplier'. Keep it near your elbow.
An awesome work!

An A to Z Topical Reference in the Words of Jesus

Cecil Price, Senior Research Fellow with Christian Information Ministries has done extensive research to compile this thorough and important reference tool "What does Jesus say about." The format includes the setting, the Biblical Text (quoted from the sayings of Jesus) arranged in alphabetical order by a key word, term, concept or phrase, beginning with "abandonment" and closing with "Zechariah." This is neither a commentary nor a dictionary but an opportunity for the reader to study the words of Jesus himself as the commentary on a topic, or concept chosen for consideration. The New American Standard Translation (updated edition) of the Bible is used as the text source for the Biblical quotations and references. I found the introductory chapter on "How to Get the Most Out of This Book" especially helpful. The appendix includes two significant articles: "How to Personally Know Jesus," and "Resources for Additional Study," as well as a "Map of the Ministry of Jesus." This user friendly, reference is insightful, very well organized, and an invaluable resource for sermon preparation, for research for Bible school and seminary students, and as an important resource tool for lay leaders. It is also valuable for any one desirous of becoming more familiar with the teaching and person of Jesus, himself. I personally found "What does Jesus say about..." helpful for preparation for my own group Bible study participation and for reflection and devotional use.
Thank you Cecil, for making my studying easier!

How delighted I was to discover this new reference book for my library. My main goal in life for many years has been to get to know Jesus better everyday. I have taken many bible study courses over the years, most being "Precepts for Life" by Kay Arthur who requires a lot of homework. I spend hours combing through reference books either while doing my homework or when I am trying to explain Jesus to someone. The joy of having this book is that I can go directly to a topic and see exactly what Jesus said about it - it's simple, unlike some reference books. Thank you Cecil, for making my studying much easier. N.R., Tavares, FL.
