Useful insights for those planning to work with handicapped children

I am a physican in a program training to specialize in the care of handicapped children. Thirty years ago I read and enjoyed this book, and I remember it still. The memory of it has helped me understand the socal dynamics that can evolve when working with people with developmental disabilities. The book's descriptions of the fear, anger, and resentment that the ten handicapped children on the boat felt towards the "typical" children, the handicapped characters' initial, unilateral assumption that a hostile interaction must surely ensue between themselves and their typical fellow passengers, and their certainty that they would be excluded and passed over if they did not barricade themselves in a row in the bow of the boat, have helped me understand some of the group and interpersonal dynamics I have seen in my work. The memory of this book has also helped me to understand and better sympathize with my patients.
