Surprisingly good!

I was expecting a conventional romance novel, instead I found much more! This was a wonderful little gem full of likeable people and americana. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Small Towns really do make Good Fiction

I just finished reading this book and I am heartily sorry to have set it down. It was wonderfully written, with well-drawn characters and a most interesting narrative "voice." Usually a narrative voice--in the 3rd person--is fairly omniscient and hasn't much of a personality, but this is not the case with this novel's "voice" --it breaks the reader/book wall several times, certainly has opinions (archly expressed) and seems not to have access to everything that transpires, only the best bits, as though it were itself a nosey Eudora neighbor. The narrative voice makes this novel what it is--downright funny, especially for those of us blessed/cursed enough to have grown up or be living in Eudoras of our own. I hope Thebo continues to write about the daily lives of interesting characters--can't wait for the next one!

Very well done.

Lottie Dougal was raised in Eudora, Kansas, and is now the local stationer. Dr. James Emery is her boyfriend, who she expected to produce an engagement ring. When it did not happen, Lottie went to her famous herbal remedies to seek out a love spell. However, the spell backfires. James chooses Angela Requena to pop the question to. At the same time there is some trouble in the Hispanic population. They are the majority of workers in the local quarry field and it is headed to bankruptcy. A lot of legal legwork begins. **** This, of course, is not all that is going on. Author Mimi Thebo is well known for taking some complex plots and sub-plots, adding in some modern day problems, and then blending it all up with some very humorous sections. This story had me grinning often as I watched the small town soap opera play out. Recommended! **** Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.
