Losing Eugenio

Winner Of The Prix Femina

In a small flat in Paris, a single mother, Nouk, lives with her son. As winter sets in, she invents a fairytale Christmas. But reality keeps breaking through the brittle facade that Nouk has constructed.

This bleakly tender novel tackles the complicated fears and emotions experienced by every lone parent. It follows the life of a woman at the edge of her resources: a mother with everything to lose.

A wry, heart-breaking account of a single mother at odds with the world, Losing Eugenio is the highly acclaimed winner of the Prix Femina and has already sold over 150,000 copies in France.

"Genevi ve Brisac has the solid gifts of a novelist. Besides the ability to make herself small and to hide behind her characters, she can also turn the cold, objective - even ironic - sadness of her gaze upon the world."?Le Figaro Litt raire

"Genevi ve Brisac writes like a slipped smile."?L'Express

Genevi ve Brisac has written three novels, several children's books and is a contributor to the literary pages of Le Monde.

A Fairy Story

From the very first page, I was mesmorized by this comical, melancholy, often unreal story of a single mother struggling to remain the adult in her relationship with endearing and wistfull son Eugenio, whom we see as the parent at many times. Nuok, formerly a succesful painter, gave up art and her husband before the book starts. We find the two beggining on a make-believe christams journey, as Nuok describes her resentment of the worlds annoiances and her persistant best friend.Written in a simple, struggling style, the novel entwines it's reader in the lives of Nuok, Eugenio and their day-to-day trecks across Paris, their games and pleasures, and a final conclusion which, though bringing an end to their childish games, lets off an air of inspiring rightfulness,
