Wearing the Spider

In this, her first novel, Susan Schaab has written an absorbing and well paced story. I found it to be a compelling page turner. The story evolves around Evie who is hoping to become a Partner in the law firm for which she works. She finds that she is involved with deals of which she had no knowledge. Her computer is hacked into, her files are tampered with and her apartment is broken into. She suspects Alan whose sexual advances she rebuffed. She begins to fear for her life not to mention her sanity. She finally enlists the aid of a man with whom she is reluctantly falling in love. The title is great. When one is in the lead breaking a new trail in Africa the leader must walk through spider webs and therefore ends up 'wearing the spider'. I thoroughly recommend this book and sincerely hope Ms. Schaab has other stories up her sleeve. Patricia Craig.

Compelling and Richly Written

Typically I read non-fiction, but on the recommendation of a friend I read this book. I just may be a convert to thriller fiction if more of them were as compelling and richly written as "Wearing the Spider". One of the standouts for me is the writing skill. Certainly I want an interesting and complex plot, which this is, but I want to enjoy the read. The flow of the story line made it very hard to put down. Moreover, this author frequently surprised me with eloquent and insightful descriptives that transported me to her locations, something that always impresses me. If the cover doesn't catch your attention, hopefully my review will. You won't be sorry - and you'll finish it wishing for more.

Perfect to read on the beach...

A fast-paced and fun legal thriller, great for vacation reading. The tension builds steadily until the last few pages. The story is unique, weaving together elements of mystery, high-tech law, and even some romance. The author has done her research and the legal and high-tech details ring true. Evie is a sympathetic character and her cat-and-mouse game with the bad guys will keep you turning the pages. Looking forward to hearing more from Susan Schaab!

Terrific suspense thriller

I read a lot of legal thriller books, but seldom does a book "grab" me from the beginning. "Wearing the Spider" did just that. The story line, which is quite believable, involves a relevant subject of current national concern - identity theft. Ms. Schaab has created characters which are realistic and well developed. This fascinating story unfolds at a fast pace all the way through to the last page. It is also refreshing to read a novel that can tell a captivating story and yet have a herione whose love interest is wholesome. I'm looking forward to future novels by this talented writer.

Web of intrigue

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (5/07) I really, really enjoyed reading "Wearing the Spider." It is one of those novels that one finds impossible to put down. If I could have given it a higher score than five stars, I would have. The author Susan Schaab has a writing talent that totally and immediately draws you into her story. In the story she explains the phrase, "wearing the spider." It refers to the lead person who clears the trail while hiking in Africa. This person walks first through the webs and when doing so, sometimes ends up wearing the spiders. This story involves office politics and corruption. Evie is vying for a partnership in the firm that she works for. She has always put her work first. A partner, whose advances she had rebuffed seems to be setting her up. When the partners approach her with complaints about her work, she realizes that someone has been messing around in her files. She suspects Alan. When she discovers that she is supposedly working on a foreign project of which she actually knows nothing about, she knows she has to investigate it further. A romantic interest helps her out with finding out what is going on. She gets mysterious calls from strangers, her apartment is broken into, she discovers emails that were sent from her account that she did not write, and she finds that she is being followed. She realizes that her life is in danger. Evie has to pull out all stops to save her reputation and her life. She also has to learn something about trusting others. Needing her boyfriend to help her, she lets her guard down with him. This is not something that comes easily. She also learns that she can't continue to trust the people that she has in the past, like the senior partners in the firm. She does not know how deep their involvement goes. "Wearing the Spider" is a great suspenseful thriller. There is nothing slow or boring happening in this story. It will keep you on edge until you find out the truth of what is going on. Fiction fans will totally enjoy this book. I recommend giving it as a gift. It is a new story and guaranteed to be enjoyed.
