This easy reading and colorful thin hardcover was published in 1981. I am pretty familiar with Israel, and find that (except for cothing and authomobile styles in the photos) it remains up-to-date when compared to the current situation there. The book is pretty much a-political, generally not taking up too much space with the controversial headline material of today's scene (so-called "cycles of violence", "occupations", etc). However, from what is offered in this area, it is quite remarkable how things have really not changed that much since 1981. But, this is mostly just a nice fresh look at a small but powerful, modern and developing democratic nation. That part still remains today. The format of the book is by the interview and story of people from all walks of life in Israel . . . Jew, Arab, male, female, immigrant, politician, soldier, farmer, religious scholar, merchant, taxi driver, etc. Very nicely done and gives a comprehensive overview of the modern State of Israel, it's brief history in this historic land, and what it's like for its citzens. Esoteric matters such as the holocaust (specifically the Yad Vashem Memorial) and the biblical significance of the land are also discussed. So in spite of the 25+ year age of this book -- If you have an interest in learning about modern Israel, this is a pretty good place to start.
