"We Hold These Truths" is Al McCann's version of the religious sensibilities of that compendium of men who are now referred to as our "founding fathers." McCann breaks his book down into two parts: part one focuses on the notion of liberty as expressed in various writings of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and all the other famous names dominating the American scene in the late 1700s. ; part two remains primarily concerned with the historical imperatives and is exampled in various vignettes having to do with the challenges to liberty and the concept of liberty as elucidated by the aforementioned American Leaders. The book attempts very successfully to offer proof of the religious core of American values in the face of those who seek to pile up historical evidence to the opposite. Whether one thinks McCann's demand for a more religious version of events is a good thing or not, one cannot maintain any level of versimilitude in the face of his overwhelming evidence. America was meant to be a religious notion, forged into a reality that many Americans today may find themselves uncomfortable with. Nevertheless, McCann is expert at marshalling his evidence and putting forth an argument at once provocative and compelling. "We Hold These Truths," is a must read for anyone interested in the reality of the American Republic in those years when no one was sure it would last. 200 plus years later, the wisdom of our philosophical ancestors pushes itself into the forefront of the contemporary experience.
