I remember reading the newspaper back in 1956 and crying at the crushing events happening in Hungary. Now Judit Makranczy has written an almost personal account of that era. Not only is the story gripping and suspensful, it is informative of that time in history. I enjoyed reading the book and so will students of all ages.
For children of any age, a real page-turner.

An outstanding tale by and outstanding teller. This heroic story, told from the viewpoint of a Hungarian boy who is fleeing with his family to freedom, maintains enough momentum to keep a younger reader's attention. Yet the book is in no way juvenile. The tale and the telling will capture the attention of readers of any age level. My compliments to the author for an excellent piece of writing.
Exciting page turner!

'We Have To Escape' by Judit Makranczy was a great adventure story, made all the more exciting because it is based on the true story of the author's life. It told the story of the author's family's escape from Hungary during the Communist takeover. Each chapter brought new adventures as the family made its way to the border, facing gunshots, prisons, interrogations, and help from strangers. While it was written for Young Readers, it kept this adult eagerly turning pages to see what would happen next.
I loved this book!

Not only because it depicts the story of one very brave and fortunate family, but I also enjoyed it because I felt like part of the story. The gripping tale sucks you right in, and the reader begins to feel as though they are with the family struggling so hard for a better life. I recommend this book for teens and adults alike! Everyone will gain something special from this novel!!! Great job, Judit.
