Island Baby-Sitter

Molly Bassett reluctantly takes a job baby sitting for Sammy Truell, while his parents are away from Netaquid Island on family emergencies. She is the first island to be hired by the Ledgers (summer people) this drab season of 1932 because of a kidnapping the previous summer. The Neaquidders are not to be trusted to earn their meager livelihood provided by the off-islanders during the season. The year-round residents of the small island keep body and soul together with their harvests of the sea, the land, and their gardens. Who did kidnap Annette Sotherby and later takes both Annette and Sammy Truell in a broad daylight ambush? Molly intends to discover the culprit and bring the children back to their parents. The late Charlotte MacLeod penned a delightful tale of rouges and winners on an island not unlike Martha's Vineyard. A worthy addition to add to a collection by a beloved cozy writer. HaintsWriting as a Small Business

An island mystery set in the 1930s

Year-round residents of a coastal island not unlike Martha's Vineyard have trouble making ends meet. And since the previous summer, when the daughter of one of the wealthy vacation home owners was kidnapped, none of the rich visitors will hire the locals for any work whatever. The locals suspect they are being blamed for the girl's disappearance. Even though the child was returned after a week-long absence, things are not back to normal--the little girl appears to be mentally unbalanced, claiming to have spent the missing week with the fairies. When the heroine, a year-round resident, gets a chance to babysit for a different wealthy family of summer residents, she knows it might be the islander's only chance to figure out what really happened and to set the record straight.
