Personal advice on Personal Evangelism

Evangelism becomes a real subject when you practice your own person-to-person witnessing about the Gospel and your own personal Christian experience. Having read about evangelism in textbooks and manuals would actually complicate your concept about doing it yourself. That's when you really need to receive practical advice from a practitioner who has taught personal evangelism and has done it himself as a lifestyle. The author comes alive when you have listened to his lectures in the classroom, or have listened to his personal accounts of adventures in the Christian faith. Ross Tooley, is the person whom you wish to meet in a classroom or a journey, to really challenge you about the exercise of your faith and to practice personal evangelism. This book is a classic that I value as I continue in the journey of faith. The young Christian needs this book as a reference manual. This makes the subject as a personal project, as opposed to the vicarious experience in a book study.

Evangelism from A to Z

The flood of new books lining the shelves of bookstores on a multitude of subjects creates a real dilemma for the would-be book-buyer. One wonders which of the many authors on a given subject really knows what he or she is talking about. Well, you won't get far into Ross Tooley's "We Cannot But Tell" before you realize you've made the right choice. It's a gold mine of wisdom, knowledge and vast experience from a man for whom personal evangelism is not a pastime but a passion. When it comes to evangelism and how to do it, Ross has got the goods. Ross has been involved in frontline (and I mean frontline) evangelism and missions for over 30 years, 17 of which were spent pioneering Youth With A Mission in the Philippines and other parts of Asia and the Pacific region. This book is not the reflection of a former missionary, but a guideline of how to witness for Christ in an effective manner. I know Ross personally, and although it's not the subject of this book, he's the kind of guy who can tell personal missionary stories with no exaggeration that jar your teeth loose. (That's the subject of his book, "Adventures in Naked Faith" which deals with those hair-raising events). One of the unique features of "We Cannot But Tell" is its broad scope. While books available on the topic of evangelism are legion, and dozens more cover cross-cultural missions subjects at various depths, there has been a dearth of books that combine the two. "We Cannot But Tell" touches both topics, covering practical evangelism from A to Z from a cross-cultural perspective. Ross hits all the basics; the attitude and motivation of the Christian in evangelism, the place of prayer in evangelism, what the real Gospel message contains and how to share it, apologetics, how to get into a conversation about God, how to give your testimony, how to lead someone to Christ, and how to follow-up and instruct new converts. Ross, however, doesn't give these practices in a "step 1,2, 3, BINGO" method, but provides scriptural backing as well as challenging teaching in each of these areas - all within the context of being Spirit-led instead of using a formula. He believes there is a right way and a wrong way to witness and writes: "Sometimes people have not responded to my message because I used the wrong approach. It wasn't what I said but how I said it. Unfortunately, because of past attitudes of "defending the truth" I turned people from the One I wanted them to know! I have come to the conclusion we have to represent Christ's goodness to be credible in the world's eyes. Otherwise they will tune us out...outsiders usually see God more readily by our genuine love and concern than by spelling out our beliefs" (page 25). The most exciting aspect of "We Cannot But Tell" is its cross-cultural emphasis. In addition to evangelizing among Westerners, Ross also applies his material to reaching Hindus, Muslims and other n
