Nobel Laureate

This small collection of stories from the Philippines' foremost storyteller is an unassuming masterpiece. So often put forward as his country's nomination for the Nobel trophy (+ the cash), Federico Sionil Jose is so much more than that. His work is a concentrated, overall view of Philippine Social History, as presented by a master of English prose (English being a second language in the Philippines). The title story concerns characters from the distant, pre-Magellan, Philippine past. Jose is adept at portraying the fate of the most forgotten of his countrymen. He is easily the finest author in English the Philippines has produced.
