Putting the human back in superhuman

What is really special about this book, for a WH40K book, is the characterisation. Goto makes Space Marines into real people with real characters. The Deathwatch is supposed to be made up of the best marines from all the different chapters, and Goto uses this as an opportunity to contrast the characteristics of the chapters and to show how they might complement or clash with each other. The result is an extremely effective novel in which the Deathwatch not only have to contend with the menace of the alien tyranids (with guns suitably blazing), but they also have to contend with each other in much more subtle ways. This is a great book to remind fans of space marines that they may be superhuman warriors, but they are still human underneath all that armour. Nice one Goto. Let's have some more!

A good addition to the stable of WH40K novels

This is a good book for the general SCI-FI reader,though some hardcore WH 40K fans would question some of the premise used. As a Sci-Fi novel I would rate it at five stars. Without having to read dozens of earlier WH40K novels and publications, you can still appreciate the story as it is told- fast paced, lots of action, some intrigue and a satisfactory conclusion. Fighting sequences are well described as are the mechanics of the weapons used. For hardcore WH40k fans, it is still a very good book- if you are not picky- some weapons and tactics do not conform to the norms established in the WH40K universe. These are, however, very minor deviations from the norm. Call it artistic freedom and enjoy the book for what it is.

Warhammer 40K at its best!

Warrior Brood is awesome. For once there is a 40K writer who knows what characterisation means! The Deathwatch are a unique force in the 40K universe, and Goto has captured their spirit perfectly. The Mantis Warriors are a real treat in this book too -- I hope that Goto pens a new novel about them. Just so that everyone out there is aware of what's going on: Ardias is running around making a fool of himself on forums about 40K and nobody seems to agree with him about this book. He appeared out of nowhere just to complain about this. The current theory is that his pitches for a deathwatch novel were rejected by Black Library and he's just bitter.

Intelligent fiction from BL!

I have waited a long time for the Deathwatch to be treated properly in a BL novel, but the wait was definitely worth it. Warrior Brood is furious action from the very first scene, and the Deathwatch have to be the coolest Space Marines in the galaxy. Loads of action, loads of character, and oodles of intrigue. I also really enjoyed the mysterious Mantis Warriors Chapter, who feature throughout, and I wonder whether Goto might write a book focussing on them in the future? I'm not sure what Patrick Huffman's problem is? He admits to only having read the first chapter, of course. This means that he shouldn't really pass such idiotic comments. READ THE WHOLE BOOK and everything will become clear: the tyrannids are supposed to be shockingly powerful (and there's a good reason); the Space Marines are supposed to have unusualy weapons because they're Deathwatch. Hence, none of Huffman's gripes make any sense at all if you actually read the book! Get passed the first chapter and everything is made clear -- we're not in kindergarten now. Warrior Brood is a cracking read for BL fans. Check it out.

YES YES YES !

I have read almost 100 books in the Warhammer series, and this is one of the best books I have read. C.S. Goto has done a wonderful job of describing the Mantis chapter of space marines, providing enough information to fill his readers in on the history of this chapter, and he does it in such a way as to not distract the readers from the main storyline. The masterful Deathwatch is also perfectly described. C.S. Goto did a perfect job of showing the differences between the various chapters that make up the kill team. He did his homework, and it shows. And to me at least, this is one of the very few Warhammer novels where the reader gets to see the space marines as individuals, not as simple 2-D cutout/paperboard characters. This is a wondeful book, and i cannot wait for the sequel to be released. Very,very highly recommended.
