"Wanting Wholeness, Being Broken" is a collection of the best sermons that I gave over a five-year period at the First Unitarian Church of Portland, OR. Some sample sermons: "Beyond Therapy": if a problem is values-based or an ethical dilemma, then maybe you need a spiritual director rather than a therapist; "Making Marriage Work": your marriage will not save you from yourself, nor from problems of being or meaning; "Living Like a Warrior": the hardest battle we face is with ourselves, with what we fear we may be or what we hope we will become." I also treat such subjects as hope, death, aging, self-acceptance, prayer, grace. This is a book that addresses the great questions of living in a down-to-earth way. On the back cover is this statement from John Buehrens, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association: "She makes room for you; but she's there, as herself, nothing more. With her experiences: they hurt; so do yours. She's been broken; so have you. And she has learned to trust again; so must you. Marilyn proclaims the truth we all must learn at last: beyond your ego, beyond mine, there is love."
