Book Overview

After the World Trade Towers went down in New York, Father Apostoli ministered at the morgue set up at Ground Zero. When search teams discovered the body of a police officer or firefighter, an honor guard formed and gathered the body with great reverence. For Father Apostoli, these moments vividly captured the unspoken code of these heroic public servants: We go in together, we come out together.

Calming the Storm

What a great book. If you are in for help spiritually, this book is the greatest. What a help for calming oneself and feeling close to God. This book is a must. I liked it so much I bought it for a group of my friends. God Bless.

Good Read

Nice little book of traditional spirituality on the virtuous life. You can't go wrong with this one. Very simple and, thus, understandable to most. It is challenging in the best sense. This book will call you to examin your life and attitudes and live in greater allegience to Jesus Christ. This is a "basic" book for your spirituality bookshelf. Recommended.

Challenges of Prayer, Charity, and Suffering

Father Apostoli is a nationally known author and retreat leader. His latest work was inspired by a strong desire to share from his own study, reflection, and experiences "whatever might help my brothers and sisters in Christ along their spiritual journey." He begins with lessons learned as one of many priests who served at Ground Zero following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York. Those and other experiences are blended into a discussion of the challenges of prayer, charity, and suffering involved in following Christ. The first section, Prayer and the Life of Virtue, addresses formal and informal prayer, the importance of spiritual reading, and ways in which God "answers" prayers. St. Augustine, we learn, suggested three reasons God sometimes says no to our prayers: asking for bad or wrong things, praying while living in sin, and lacking confidence and perseverance. Examples and citations from Scripture are used to explain the reasons and help readers avoid or overcome them. The second section, The Practice of Virtue, uses the same methods to explore temptation, judgmental thoughts, gossip, and charitable deeds. The third section, Suffering and the Life of Virtue, speaks of preventive and corrective suffering. Preventive suffering, those life events that bring disappointment, such as job loss, "happen by God's providence" to prevent us from falling into sin. The term "corrective suffering" describes trials allowed by God to "call us back from sin and to draw us closer to him," such as the attack on the World Trade Center and the AIDS crisis. As Fr. Apostoli suggests, the steps to a virtuous life are simple to understand but challenging to practice. "Walk Humbly with Your God" provides a fresh roadmap for the journey.
