In Edwardian Suffolk, a manor house stands alone in a lost corner of the Fens: a glinting wilderness of water whose whispering reeds guard ancient secrets. Maud is a lonely child growing up without a mother,...
Really enjoyed the gothic dread in the novel as you realize that something awful and life changing is going to happen. As the story unfolds thru the eyes of main character Maud, the reader sympathizes with what all she endures growing up under her oppressive, eventually insane father's rule. The reader gets a historical look back at pre world War era, countryside life in the fens. The settings of the fen and the great manor house are creepily described in an elegant way that puts you in that place and time and make for a deliciously creepy read.
