She spends her days trying to keep the farm running and sending money to her cousin who owns the farm. She has given up on the idea of marriage and wishes only to give her cousins and sisters a season, seeing them happily wed if nothing else. Then one dark, rainy, muddy day she and they meet the Earl of Revensdale at their door who declares that he won the farm off their cousin in London during a card game. Desperate Brooke wagers against him, if she wins he signs the farm over to her, and if he wins she will forfeit to him her virtue.
