Three children end up at the hospital and find it not the way they pictured, but immediately blend in with an established population that seems in no way inhibited by its neuroses... kids being kids. Relationships bloom over a backdrop of mental hospital obligations: going to therapy, taking meds, and sitting in group. Girls have gabfests at the picnic table outside. Children play in the mud like pigs. Their families join them for Christmas at the hospital. Their neuroses are swallowed whole by happiness. There is one twelve-year-old girl, however, who may have lost that part of herself - struggling quietly with a visitor who threatens to drag her deeper into darkness, and resisting a premature end that seems more inevitable with each passing day.
