"Vert-Vert" is a narrative poem originally written in French by Jean-Baptiste-Louis Gresset, here presented in English translation by R. Snow. The poem, a satirical work, recounts the story of a parrot named Vert-Vert, beloved by the nuns of a convent. When sent to another convent, Vert-Vert is exposed to the outside world and corrupted by the language and behaviors he encounters. Returning home, he is no longer the innocent creature they once adored.
Gresset's poem is a witty commentary on innocence, experience, and the corrupting influence of society. This English translation allows a new audience to appreciate the charm and humor of "Vert-Vert," offering a glimpse into 18th-century French society and its values.
