Solid until the end.

This is the story of Gwyn, who was sold to a brothel by her cousin, and Andrew, who first saw Gwyn and knew he had to have her. The story itself was surprisingly gritty. Gwyn at first entertains thoughts of running away but the girls at the brothel quickly inform her of the harsh realities of life for a girl on her own. Instead she winds up trying her best to find a guy who will be nice to her and hopefully protect her from everything else. Since she is so beautiful, the lady who runs the brothel decides to have an auction for her, and Andrew winds up winning her. For 1000 pounds he has exclusive rights to her until he tires of her. After finally coming to terms with herself and her situation, Gwyn learns that while Andrew intends to set her up in a house of her own, he will also be married in a few short months. And now she has to face the fact that she will become an adulteress. This book shines in the very down to earth presentation it has. Gwyn has to struggle with the life that she is now living, the change in her perception to what she thought when she was sheltered and didn't know any better to what she knows now. The main failing which made me put it at 4 stars instead of the very solid 5 stars it was at, was the very end of the book. Too many characters wound up with their own minute POV section at the end and too many characters that didn't warrant a section to describe how they find their happily ever after. The final part that made those brief glimpses to other characters so useless was the fact that due to certain events that happened afterwards, a few of the characters were never mentioned again, so we never do find out what happened to them. Aside from that, this is a book that I think is in the top five of historical romances that I've read. Definitely worth the read, and I'm very glad I own it so I can read it again later.

A Truly Awesome Read!

Andrew Hawksworth, Earl of Scarborough lives a life of carousing, loneliness and distrust. Because of his childhood he looks at the world and mostly everyone in it as his enemy except for one... Gwynneth. Gwynneth Sleaforth a vicar's daughter is drugged and sold to the most notorious brothel in England, the Dark Stallion. Once Andrew sees Gwynneth, he knows his life will never be the same and buys her. Another also wants Gwynn, the Duke of Cuckfield but his intentions are to destroy her for different reasons. Gwynn fights Andrew and the strong attraction she feels for him at every turn but later helplessly gives in. Andrew instantly falls in love with Gwynn yet does not know how to display it outside of the bed or without showing himself to be possessive and domineering. Gwynneth looks past Andrew's bullying ways and falls in love with him. But later finds out that he plans to marry another, yet keep her on the side. It's a battle of wills between Andrew and Gwynneth. They fight each other yet continually crave each other. I've read this book numerous times and I never fail to get tired of it. I think its a beautiful love story between Andrew and Gwynn and I recommend it to everyone! It's a keeper and you won't regret buying it!
