Lots of Pictures; But LESS Instruction than "I DO VEILS So Can You!" (by Claudia Lynch)

This is a beautiful book! It has lots of full color pictures some of which are fairly instructive, especially if you are completely unfamiliar with bridal headpieces & veils. There is good instruction here. (I gave the book 4 stars & would have given it 4.5 had that been an option.) However I've made veils & headpieces of various types & I personally do NOT consider this book to be an Adequate Resource, in & of itself. IF you plan to undertake the significant project of making your own headpiece and/or veil - especially IF you are a First Time Maker, I would strongly Advise buying both this book AND "I Do Veils - So Can You!" which (although totally lacking the gorgeous color photos this book is full of) is nonetheless FILLED TO THE BRIM with A MASSIVE WEALTH of ESSENTIAL INFORMATION & CONCISE INSTRUCTIONS for the ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION of an infinite variety of headpieces & veils! (Please see my exhaustive review of that book on this site.) I own BOTH books and IMO that's really the Best way to approach this subject! Each book contains unique information. This book is especially Useful if you are Not very familiar with the various styles of headpieces & veils. But if you genuinely must Choose between these two books? I own them Both but I consider "I Do Veils" to be AN ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL RESOURCE, for BOTH the Novice AND the Professional Maker of bridal headwear. Since you can get a copy of either book for under $5 - why not get them BOTH? If you are a Bride to Be who is even slightly Unfamiliar with the wide variety of both Current & Vintage bridal headwear, buy This book. You will find the extensive photographs Extremely Useful! But IF you are seriously considering actually Making your own Headpiece or Veil? I would strongly advise Against undertaking a project of that magnitude without spending the Additional princely sum of $5 to have access to the *Definitive* book on the subject. "I Do Veils - So Can You!" will VASTLY EXPAND your Skills beyond the (admittedly useful) instruction this book contains. Definitely INVEST IN BOTH BOOKS if you really Do intend to make a living (or part of your living) making bridal headwear. I honestly do consider "I Do Veils" to be an ESSENTIAL Reference Book for Any bridal headwear Professional. Either way - whether as a Bride to Be or as a Professional Maker - you need to be Optimally & Thoroughly Informed. "I Do Veils" is illustrated solely with Detailed Line Drawings - but has NO Photos. However, the VOLUME & LEVEL OF DETAILED written and drawn Instruction is Exhaustive. The Instructional Content of "I Do Veils" is MUCH MORE EXTENSIVE than what is contained in this book. I suspect the reviewer who strongly preferred this book liked the fact that it is So Beautifully Illustrated, with Lots of gorgeous full color pics! Even the sewing techniques are illustrated with color photos! Also, the styles of bridal wear pictured in this book (while still somewhat dated) are more "current" & in tune with the fashions of today. But IMO this book NOT a Complete Resource (as alleged). I've already MADE Bridal Headpieces & Veils. IMO You will NEED BOTH BOOKS to Best guarantee Success!

A comprehensive guide to veils and headpieces

I ordered this book at the same time as "I Do Veils and so Can You," and this book puts that one to shame. This book does a great job of demonstrating how to cut the different shapes of veils from tulle, easy to follow instructions for various headpiece construction techniques, and a wide variety of options for embellishments and finishing. There are lots of options presented in terms of fabrics and materials, and the book suggests actual things you can buy at your local fabric store. Don't waste your money on the other outdated books out there when you can learn everything you need from this one!
