I've used this book for years as a source for interesting, real world applications in algebra. This is not your typical algebra textbook. Bolker focuses on mathematical modeling. The level is appropriate for college algebra and below (with some modification). There are more than enough problems to pick and choose from. Nearly one third of the book explores linear models and then goes on to exponential, quadratic, and some trigonometry. The emphasis on linear and exponential models is especially useful since those functions express two fundamental types of growth - by a constant amount or by a constant factor. Bolker also discusses necessary skills along the way, including estimation and calculator use, scientific notation, systems of equations, logarithms. Highly recommended as a reference for math teachers.
