The Legacy of Avatar Yangchen (The Woman Who Outsmarted Her Opponents In The Fight For Balance)

The Legacy of Avatar Yangchen begins with Zongdu of Jonduri, Chaisee, telling her tale of when she was a little girl and how her village was destroyed, sparking her vengeance. Years later, Yangchen has a dream that transforms into a nightmare about her sister, Jetsun, that haunts her. When Yangchen awakens, she meets with the Shangs of Bin-Er to discuss the city’s progress. Later, Yangchen meets with Chief Oyaluk of the Water Tribe to mend the rifts formed between the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Water Tribe due to the Platinum Affair. However, Yangchen’s efforts are wasted due to Chief Oyaluk’s stubbornness and paranoia. Meanwhile, Kavik has formed a partnership with Mama Ayunerak of the White Lotus. Unknown to him, Mama Ayunerak provides a one-way ticket to Kavik’s home. They discover the Avatar at the Spirit Oasis. Yangchen has no choice but to take Kavik back to save his life, but she doesn’t trust him one inch after his betrayal. Neither do the members of Team Avatar—Jujinta, Akuudan, and Takadum. Things heat up later when the weapon Unanimity escapes under the guard of Avatar Yangchen’s fellow monks. People end up injured, including one of Yangchen’s closest friends. Chaisee and Kavik’s brother, Kalyaan’s partnership puts Yangchen, Kavik, and her team in a bind. Everyone seems to want ownership over Unanimity—including the White Lotus. Mama Ayunerak thinks Yangchen is an ignorant child who doesn’t know what to do with the immense power. Kind of ironic since Yangchen is the Avatar, the master of all four elements, and beats her opponents in an intellectual and physical battle. Ultimately, Kavik must choose between friendship and family, while Yangchen has to overcome many obstacles in her wake. I did enjoy the ending when Yangchen discovers how Jetsun is living in the Spirit World and her purpose. Now, I was upset that Yangchen and Kavik never shared a kiss. Their relationship seems to be implied rather than shown through physical affection. I did like the possible love triangle between Yangchen, Kavik, and Jujinta throughout the book. I know the main reason for their rocky relationship was that Yangchen and Jujinta didn’t trust Kavik for an extended time due to helping Kalyaan in the past. On a side note, I love the cover showing Yangchen and Kavik. Sadly, the author, F.C. Yee, wrote a note at the back of the book, indicating that this will be the last Avatar book. I honestly wouldn’t mind reading every Avatar story throughout the years. I would love that, but I understand it takes a lot to write these novels. I enjoyed them while they lasted and will continue to reread them in the future. A big thank you goes to F.C. Yee, Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko, and the Avatar team for these books. I highly recommend these books to any Avatar: The Last Airbender fan.
