UNSPOKEN JOY is a story about a young woman coming to terms with a disability. Joy Claxtin, a beautiful, educated 27-year-old is left mute at the age of three after a near-fatal illness. Since then she's communicated in sign language. After several failed relationships where her disability was a factor, she now appeases her love life through fantasy. She fantasizes about Keith Riley, the handsome TV news anchor and celebrity-like figure in the African American community. Keith Riley, age 30, has his own love problems. He may still carry a torch for the woman who dumped him eight years ago. Determined to pick up the pieces of his life after three meaningless relationships, Keith is ready for love when he spots a beautiful woman in a quaint downtown restaurant. Her aura is phenomenal, but he lets her get away in a moment of misplaced pity when he sees her sign language as a barrier of communication between them. He later regrets that decision when he can't get her off his mind. But with encouragement from a friend, he sets out to find her and after weeks of futile searching and frustration, he learns that her name is Joy Claxtin. In the meantime, Joy has learned that she has a secret admirer named, Keith. The name intrigues her and she fantasizes that he's Keith Riley. But when she learns that they are one in the same, her reality is thrown into an emotional whirlwind.
