Unseen: Worth a Look

I've been a fan of Paul Jennings' stories and books since I was 9, but for a while, when I was about 12 or 13, I went off him a bit. It was after reading "Uncovered", which I was rather disappointed with at the time. I'd get back into him, and re-read the books of his I had, but I wouldn't get any of his new ones after "Uncovered", for fear of being a disappointed again. I'm back in a Paul Jennings phase, and I saw a copy of "Unseen" for a good price, so I bought it. I'm so glad I did. This is one of his best short story collections, definitely a return to form. "Unseen", first published in 1998, is the ninth book by Paul Jennings in what is now being called the "Un" series, collections of quirky short stories for kids and about kids set in and around Australia. The series has sold millions of copies here down under and has spawned a couple of TV series. There are adventurous moments, emotional moments, and even a few gross outs. It's fun for all ages, I reckon. There are eight stories in "Unseen". Have a look: "One-Finger Salute" is all about a boy who really wants to get back at a bully by giving him "the finger", but can't because he has no middle fingers. His luck changes, and he gets those middle fingers back, but is it really for the better? "Round the Bend" sees a top notch Dad run over a dog, and has to go buy a new one to replace it. It seems an overtold kind of story on the surface, but is freshened up by great little twists. It's set round the town of Fish Creek. I've been to Fish Creek (it's a sleepy, grassy place a short drive from the coast) so it was easy for me to imagine everything. "Seeshell" is set on a fishing boat and is full of young love, desire, fear and mystery. It's the story that the cover illustration portrays, and it's a good one. "Piddler on the Roof" is rather unique, as it's a sequel, the follow up to "Little Squirt" (a story you can read in Paul Jenning's 1991 book "Unmentionable"). Just like it's prequel, it's plot is all about peeing. I'll say no more about this one. "Ticker" takes the reader to a bleak, windswept coast very similar to the one Paul describes in his old short story "Nails". This particular story is all about a boy's grandfather who has a heart attack, and his last request involving a wristwatch. Interesting twist at the end, even if I did see it coming... "Guts" sees a brother and a sister go off into the rainforest in search of their Dad's car, which has been stolen. They end up having an encounter with a rather ravenous ghost of sorts. Lots of plot twists in this one. "Shadows" is a simple enough story about an enchanted hall of mirrors. Very evocative descriptions, and I quite liked it. "Squawk Talk" is hillarious, it really, really is. Though I've just read it, it's already going up in my person top ten favorite Paul Jennings short stories of all time. Here, the story is told by a brat, the brattiest brat Paul Jennings has ever written. He's rude, he's a sleaze and he's violent. Tha
