This guide is a visual alternative to traditional text-based instruction, using two-page tutorials and step-by-step screenshots. It is aimed at the visual learner who wants a straightforward approach to learning. A CD-ROM is included.
This is a good book to learn Unix. I tend to be a visual learner and this book has plenty of sceenshots so you could follow along on your workstation. There are some downsides however. Some of the commands will work on different versions of Unix or "Unix-Like" operating systems such as the many Linux distributions, but it's meant mainly to be followed along by people with Solaris installed. All the screenshots are from the CDE gui. I don't mind that most, if not all, of the screenshots were from the Solaris operating system but I think the book would've been more effective and been able to reach a larger audience if the book would've focused on the three major operating systems (Solaris, FreeBSD and Linux) and just note the slight differences in the commands where applicable. This book has a lot of information for the beginner to get up and running with Unix but it's geared towards the novice who has no experience. It would be nice to have one of these visual books that go into more advanced issues such as setting up servers and getting Unix play nice with Microsoft Windows.

After purchasing this old book, and buy for 999 Pesos (Manila Pesos), I think this is one of my best buys UNIX Books. Nothing really compare for visual learning and seeing screen shots while you're in the bed resting from work. This save a great amount of time for your self development. I know they are great books out there in UNIX but you have to read and understood on how they structure their paragraph but if you seeing screen shot pictures, damn!!!, it save time for me. My only concern here is some screen capture are little bit small for me to see, nonetheless everything is OK.
Good coverage of the basics

This book was a good, general introduction to UNIX. I'm writing this to let others know what to expect. The book is presented in a step-by-step format. Every two pages cover a specific lesson. The examples are simple and well explained. The majority of the book covers shell usage/commands. The rest dealing with features of the Solaris GUI. Know that 1/4 of this book is tailored for Solaris. The rest is neutral. Also know that the examples are extremely simple.
must read for beginners

This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the basics of UNIX. The author really made it so easy and I have to say "if you think you can never understand UNIX, this is your saviour".
