Advanced Mpls Design and Implementation

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) works great for getting Internet Protocol (IP) traffic to move reliably over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) links, particularly when there's a strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirement or a probable need to scale up. Vivek Alwayn, an experienced CCIE who helps service providers implement MPLS for a living, shares his considerable knowledge of MPLS in Advanced MPLS Design and Implementation. After a brief introduction to MPLS--it should be more of a refresher, really, for people who already know what the technology is about--Alwayn brings out scores of details that define how MPLS works, and how it can be made to work better. His best technique is to present a scenario, declare some design goals for it, and proceed to explain how to achieve those goals. Reading these case studies is really enjoyable from an engineering perspective (even if yours is not a Cisco shop), and they feature enough step-by-step instructions for the IOS command line to never leave you guessing about how to translate the approach to your own equipment. In addition to solving model problems, Alwayn takes time to explain why MPLS works the way it does. In lots of cases, this means calculations. He shows how LCNs are allocated to port groups, how link metrics are evaluated to yield desirable and undesirable results, and how Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) and Label Virtual Circuits (LVCs) are carved out of a port. He's also generous with configuration listings. In a typical exercise, he'll show complete configurations for all routers involved, even if there are eight or nine of them. --David Wall Topics covered: Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) for people who already have a handle on what it's for and want to use it on their service provider networks and corporate backbones. With lots of command detail and configuration specifics (which are particular to Cisco Systems routers) and engineering discussions (which are not), the author explains how to implement MPLS for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) over both Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Beyond that, there is coverage of traffic engineering, Quality of Service (QoS), and migration. This description may be from another edition of this product.

Splendid presentation

This is a very nice book. It is well written and organized very well in a structured manner. I also noticed, that one could read the chapter on Traffic Engineering without reading the previous chapters on MPLS VPNs and still get a grasp of the topic under discuion. In this sense, the book is very modular.I would recommend this book to anyone trying to catch up on MPLS from the scratch. The title indicates that the book is...

An excellent MPLS book

I just finished reading this book, and would recommend it for anyone who needs to understand and configure MPLS. I really like the way the book is organized. It provides comprehensive theory followed by detailed configuration examples. It is right on target and covers MPLS from beginning to end and is great for all levels. The author did a very good job of not delving into the theoretical portion of MPLS and RFC-related details.If...

The complete MPLS reference guide!

Let me start by saying, that I am a first time MPLS networker. I have designed Routed WAN, ATM and SONET systems in the past. It was imperative to read up on the technology and get an understanding of the technology for me to be sucessful in my current MPLS project. The Advanced MPLS book truly takes the reader from WAN technology basics to the creation of complex MPLS networks. The Packet based MPLS chapters provide good...

A very good reference guide for MPLS

It took me 3 solid days to read this book, since we have a major MPLS project coming up. It is very well written and the examples take you from the basics to the advanced. The more advanced content, I noticed was in the ATM and Traffic Engineering sections. This is the only MPLS book which covers ATM MPLS, none of the other books, I have purchased, including the other Cisco Press book covers ATM MPLS or Traffic Engineering...

I can finally implement MPLS correctly!

Advanced MPLS Design and Implementation, by Vivek Alwayn finally explains MPLS in a way that lets me understand how to implement it correctly. I purchased many books on the theory of MPLS, but they all fell short on how to implement it.The case studies in this book are excellent! They serve as a core reference for both the design and implementation of MPLS networks. The book also does a good job in explaining MPLS VPNs and...
