I had worked 14 years for a defense contractor as a Submarine Systems Engineer before leaving the company in 1989 to pursue a MS in Computer Science. Before leaving the company, I had pursued a MS in Ocean Engineering, majoring and/or emphasis in Underwater Acoustics. In the 90's, I worked in the private sector as a software engineer. I came back to the Defense industry in 1999 as a software engineer and now (2001) I'm again in Systems engineering dealing with sonar and acoustics.Everything that I had learned in 14 years either by doing (OJT) or taking university level or in-house courses is presented in Burdic's book. I don't want to overstate this but, if you can learn everything in his book, you'll have learned everything that took me 14 years to learn.
An excellent detailed text on underwater acoustics

This book is ideally used to expand and support the concepts discussed and introduced in Urick's book. It is especially helpful in its treatment of random processes and their application to the understanding of underwater acoustics. Not an easy read but I recommend it as an essential text for any practising engineer or researcher in underwater acoustics.
