Excellent guide for those incapacitated by severe stress.

This book by an Australian psychiatrist is particularly valuable to those affected by stress, wishing to better understand their condition. In today's changing world and workplace it's value is probably greater now than when first published in revised format in 1990. Many people are unaware of the stages and symptoms of real stress. Many partners and work mates or managers are unaware of the clues manifested by those suffering stress but remaining silent out of fear and embarrassment. Those suffering stress, and often the accompanying illnesses of agrophobia, for instance, will gain some reassurance that they are not going "mad" but are suffering from an illness caused by overload which can be recognised and treated. The symptoms of stress, such as panic attacks can be of such severity that the afflicted person may believe they are dying, or having a heart attack, etc. This book clearly explains in simple terms, the mechanisms of the body and mind in their reactions to stressful situations and how those reactions and symptoms escalate as the degree and period of stress increase. The author covers the effect of stress on relationships, treatment and "what to do", psychosomatic disorders, etc. Importantly, the book provides the afflicted with a clearer picture of their problem and the information to place their condition in perspective, and explain it to those closest to them. Most of all it gives those endeavouring to escape from the black clutches of stress - it used to be called a nervous breakdown - the understanding and necessary hope to take a more positive attitude with their problem.
