On the edge of a vast forest stands Anyir, a settlement founded by once nomadic warriors and now ruled by Thamrill, who claims power through Romm, the High One. The long peace of Anyir has been broken by a string of brutal attacks on travelers by those who have come to be called the Blood Spirits, who sever the feet and ears from their victims and leave them hanging along the trade routes. Unsatisfied by Anyir's guard's ability to protect its citizens, Immignar, who remembers well a time before widespread fear, resolves to stop the Blood Spirits himself. Exiled from her animist tribe, she must wander the land in search of the spirit of her deceased husband so that they both may be at rest, aided only by her skills and the mask affixed to her head-- her link to another plane. As she descends into her psyche, her journey takes her from a quest for peace to the limits of her will and reality.
