Book Overview

Biltmore House, a palatial mansion being built by the Vanderbilts, American "royalty," is in its final stages of construction in North Carolina. The country's grandest example of privilege, it symbolizes the aspirations of its owner and the dreams of a girl, just as driven, who lives in its shadow. Trots Out Every Trope Possible

From the ol’ timey idiom slinging local yokels to the egregiously arrogant genteel, Ms. Jordan-Lake manages to trot out every cliché imaginable. Were that not enough, she souses the entire plot with overdone overtones of racism, classism and any other possible century-old cultural clash she can cram in edgewise. She takes such great liberties with the actual mores and societal expectations of the time that the entirety of the novel is impossible and ridiculous. Any reader with the most basic understanding of the era will spend more time incredulous then immersed.
