Love, Life and College

Truth Be Told tells the story of Kahlila Bradford as she evolves through her second semester of college at Franklin University. Kahlila is intelligent, beautiful and socially responsible. She has several good friends-Robyn, Desiree, and JT, as well as a popular boyfriend, Tariq. The only thing that Kahlila seems to be missing is passionate, unconditional love...then she meets Dave.Dave Robinson is a Teacher Assistant for Kahlila's Black Collective Responsibility class. When the two are chosen to develop a summer program for underprivileged kids sparks fly and their connection is undeniable. The only problem is Dave is already in a committed, long-term relationship.Rachel Skerritt has written an excellent debut novel that accurately depicts college life and first love. The characters are so well developed that by the end of the novel, they are like old friends. The story was crisp and had several socially conscious sub-plots such as teenage pregnancy, race relations, interracial dating, labeling and stereotypes, loyalty, and giving back to the community. This novel is so versatile that both teens and adults young and old can enjoy it. I highly recommend this novel and look forward future works from this author. I definitely hope a sequel is in the works.Reviewed by Latoya Carter-QawiyyThe RAWSISTAZ Reviewers

Make way for Rachel Skerritt!

"Truth Be Told" is a must read! This is one of those rare novels where you simply cannot put it it down. When you must take a break from reading, you will experience withdrawal symptoms. I keep it by my bedside and re-read excerpts from time to time. There is something relatable in every character. Her style of writing is unique and refreshing, equipped with emails, poetry, and an agenda that only she can reveal. Thank you Rachel Skerritt for helping me to recapture some of the best years of my life--undergrad! Truth be told, this book was captivating!

Authentic, Lyrical, and Memorable

Ms. Skerritt accomplishes in her first novel what many seasoned authors often fail to do: write a story that resonates so deeply with the reader that it is impossible to forget. Her characters are real and accesible; their experiences are simultaneously unique and common to everyone. Skerritt's "hip" and humorous writing style makes the novel extremely entertaining, and her thoughtful portrayal of the complexities of unexpected love is fresh and compelling. For anyone looking to be inspired and enlightened, particularly on the unspoken truths of love, Truth Be Told is an absolute must read!

Black life in College....

What a phenomenal first swing by Rachel Skerritt. Truth Be Told is an engaging and refreshing glimpse of black love, black life and personal and collective responsibility. Skerritt courageously explores issues of loyalty, isolation and identity as the books characters learn some of harsh lessons of life and the risks associated with daring to love. While there is quite a bit of character introduction in the first few chapters, the last 2/3 of the book are a fast paced read that make you resist the temptation to put the book down. The email chapters were a welcomed addition that gave the book a unique flavor. On the whole, I found the book to be very enjoyable and look forward to more work from this author in the future.

The Truth about Truth Be Told

Truth Be Told by Rachel Skerritt is an excellent debut for a definite up and coming young novelist. The story that is told by the author is one that is very familiar to anyone that has gone to college and fallen in love. It is written in a very free-flowing and easy-to-read style that is also "with the times". There are chapters that are purely e-mail conversations; there are chapters that are nothing but the thoughts of each character involved. Each of these styles gives more depth to the characters and their personalities and allows the reader to really feel as if they truly know all of these people. You will relate. It is a must read. And that's the Truth!
