The Blazing Light of Truth!

This book is one in a series of Finney's sermons, published by Kregel publications in the 1970's. I owe them all and they are all outstanding. Unfortunately they are out of print at the present time. Is false repentance possible? Finney thought so and I agree. Anyone who has been associated with the modern Christian church knows something is desperately wrong. The general attitude among most professing Christians is that God's Grace is somehow `license' to keep on sinning. They proclaim that no one is perfect so therefore Grace covers our shortcomings and presents us to God `Perfected' in Christ. But something has been twisted in the presentation. Surly the grace of God is a free gift to which nothing can be added by works. But what happened to repentance. That's where Finney's message comes in. He proves in spectacular manner that a heart unchanged, unwilling to follow God, and abhorrent of self denial, is a un-repented heart, or rather a `False' repentance. True repentance, as he so rightly pointed out, is not only `sorrow' for sin, but more importantly a `turning' from sin. The word itself denotes a `change' of direction. Finney showed us that a man is not saved by `intending' to do right, but by turning to God and abandoning his sin. We see in this message the pervasive view of modern Christianity, that grace somehow makes up for our deficiencies and all that is necessary on our part is `knowledge' of Christ, or faith, if you would call it that, and we are saved regardless of our conduct or devotion to the cross. Finney showed us that scripture clearly teaches otherwise and that true repentance will produce a submissive heart that Loves God and desires His Truth. True saints, he taught us, are distressed when `professing' Christians continue in sin and make excuses for it. Because it dishonors God and insults the Spirit of Grace. What can Christ offer a world lost in the corruption of sin if His own followers are bound by that same sin? If the New Birth is not a total dynamic change of heart, a real transformation, than the Gospel is to not. The Apostles called the world to repentance and faith. (read Acts) That produced converts `sold out' to the Word of Truth. Why are today's churches filled with half hearted, disobedient professors? The answer is simple, False Repentance and few men with the moral courage to call them to True Repentance. Finney's message rings clear across the annals of time, `Repent or Perish', Turn from sin to God and experience a REAL change of heart. If you can find a used copy of this book, or any in this series, snatch it up. Let it be your guide, with the Bible, to wake up a sleeping church and bring them to the Cross.
