Reality Check

Reading these short stories made me feel I was next to the characters, feeling their feelings and making practical judgements about the situation as opposed to viewing events from the detached perspective that history gives us. I kept saying to myself, "Of course a person would feel that way in that situation. Why didn't I realize that before?" One wonders how much clarity would be added to the current situation if a writer with Anthony Grooms' talent would write in the same manner about people in Iraq. As I read the book, the stories built in intensity. After some, I felt as if my breath had been taken away. I was right there where I didn't want to be. What a writer!

I was moved when...

...I read these stories about living in a difficult time. It was so well written that I could hear the characters' voices in my head: "I bet you know everything about calculus, Miss Perkins, an intelligent, good-looking woman like you" (...) "Oh, Mr. Beasly. Do call me Gladys." made me laugh out loud. The theme of the short story collection - or at least one of the themes - about taking a stand and the little choices that we sometimes are forced to make, either by conscience or circumstance, joined these stories into a unity. Grooms' writing is functional, not flowery. It's sometimes humorous, but not hollow. He has incorporated historic events into his stories; just enough to make them connect with anyone who is not familiar to what happened back then, but still not slowing the forward motion of the narrative. I am convinced that these stories will stand the test of time.

Trouble No More is filled with quiet drama and is a real troublesome delight to read. For those who were too deep into the forest in the sixties to see all the trees, Mr. Grooms' short stories provide an ariel view of the times. His characters are familiar, funny, and sometimes sad, but always compelling. For me, the true test of a good is read is my own emotional and intellectual reaction. Trouble No More made me laugh, cry and get angry and gave me plenty to think about.
