The perfect book for that precocious little kid you know.

To begin with- I was a very strange little kid. I read ALL the time, and suppose, developped a somewhat dark sense of humor. So it is with great fondness that I look back on this book. Until recently, I was convinced I had lost it, and was much bereaved over it. Thankfully, I found my old copy in my garage, and since have restored it to its righftul place on my "Old Nostalgic Childhood Books I will hopefully read to my kids one day" shelf. What to say? The book is about Norwegian trolls, and gives kids good information in an easy to understand- and most importantly, fun- fashion. The pictures also make the information easy to retain. It also has a fair amount of humor (both in text and illustrations) that the smarter kids (and attentive adults) will appreciate it. All that is enough to give it three or four stars, easily. But then there are the illustations. My God, they alone give it another two stars, easily! It is these wonderfully dark and funny illustrations that have stayed in my mind for well over ten years, and to this day, give me a nice chuckle when I think about them. Consider, for instance, the example of "Hulder", a bewitching she-troll that looks like a stunning young woman- except she has a cow's tail. One picture shows her in the nude, sitting on a log- her tail swishing as if to hit flies. The next page shows her marrying a man, with the caption, "Once in a while a hulder fallls so much in love with a boy that she is willing to marry him in a Christian church. She then loses her tail, and becomes the best wife a man can have." We see a man and a woman in a horse-drawn carriage, leaving their wedding- the woman is accompanied by a knowing smile- and her hulder tail! Priceless. This book is sure to please the little kid hiding in many adults or the various little kids that seem to be the reincarnation OF adults.
