Five Stars, well written for anyone to understand

The prior reviewer sounded like me before I read this book. While he did give it a four, a part of him could not or did not find the safety and sobriety that took me back to my 12 step support family. Thank you. MK

Written for counselors, but helpful for survivors and their loved ones

If you're a survivor of sexual, physical or emotional abuse, as well as the sufferer (whether currently active or not) of some sort of substance addiction, you can find a lot of wonderful insights in this book about how your abuse affected your addiction, and how it affected you in other ways. The only reason I don't five-star it is it goes too far down the 12-Step straight and narrow as far as suggestions on how to get help for addiction. "Secular" or "non-Step" alternatives aren't even mentioned. I don't think that's totally the product of ignorance, either; HCI is second only to Hazelden as a recovery publisher and is, basically, 12-Step "invested" to the gills. That said, survivors of trauma and addiction who are well clear of Step groups can still get good help from this book.
