Set in 1911, this is a story about William Hickler, photographer, who joins an historic expedition leading to the discovery of a lost city in the Peruvian Andes. The human interest of the novel is William's unrequited love for the expedition's Peruvian guide Ernesto Mena. It is a beautiful story which repays careful reading; the characters are alive, interesting and likeable, and the descriptions of Peru are beautiful. The period setting, while relevant from the events of discovery, and of course the bulky camera equipment, does not affect the love story, which remains timeless.
