"This exhibition has been organized to commemorate the Millennium of Poland, celebrated in the years 1960-1966. It is, of course, impossible to represent the complete development of a country's art throughout 1,000 years; but we have chosen outstanding masterpieces which illuminate Polish culture and art in successive periods of the nation's history, beginning with the 11th century and ending with the first half of the 19th. Included are works by Polish artists, as well as those done by foreign artists who devoted themselves to Polish subjects, thus showing Poland's active relations with the main centers of European art. The exhibition does not attempt to cover the last part of the 19th century nor contemporary art: this period, with its new forms of expression, would require a separate exhibition."
