What would it be like?

What would it be like to be a single woman traveling in male dominated cultures? Any American man who has been to Asia or the Middle East has probably asked himself this question, but has had little, if any, opportunity to get an answer. Kathleen Lee provides some answers and brings a perspective shaped by extensive experience and a keen perception of culture ( both hers and others). This is not the flowery diary of a weekend tourist. This is an honest look at the loneliness, sexual tension, self-doubt and unparalled exhilaration that an independent American woman experiences while living, traveling and , at times, wandering aimlessly through China, Pakistan and Eastern Russia.Written as fiction and told through the eyes of several main characters, the voice is certainly that of Lee and is witty, honest and brutally frank in its assessment of countries, cultures, people and herself. I was reminded of the quote ," Writing is easy, you just open a vein and bleed all over the paper."
