My husband ordered this for me for a Valentines' Day gift, after our trip to Quebec City for Carnival. There we tried molasses cake, and other regional goodies. My enthusiasm for authenitc regional cuisine led him to order this book for me. They are very simple, very basic recipes, which can easily be prepared with on a tight budget - precisely what women in Quebec years ago had to do! Reading the recipes, I could imagine how the dishes would taste. I became nostalgic for the narrow, cobbled, snow-covered streets of Old Quebec City. This is a gorgeous, charming country with a harsh winter, this is no place for the weak-hearted. So no wonder the food is hearty - lots of pork lard, and beef and butter are called for.My only quarrel is that I wish the author had made a little list of some of the traditional herbs and ingredients used in cooking - I'm sure the old-time Quebecers seasoned their food with more than salt and pepper. But I guess this shows my limitation as a cook , that I can't figure out what to toss in.Some of the recipes are too heavy for me to ever try - potted pork among them - but the desserts are perfect, and this little book is a lovely introduction to the traditional foods of fascinating community of people. Bon Apetit!
Very Very interesting cookings!
