contra sola scriptura

great place to start if you ever wondered about the historical nature of the keystone of Protestant theology, and why it fails to produce the truth and secure the Church. The Holy Spirit, living in the Church, is what constitutes the foundation of truth and unity.

Yikes, Scooby! It's back in print!

I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Not only does Congar present his thesis with great expertise, he covers ALL the bases in regards to tradition, scripture, and the Church just as the subtitle says. He's done his homework, now do yours! Protestants beware! This will not be a quick read, however. You'll need to take some time to chew on this one. Other books which you may want to look at include: "Not by Scripture Alone" by Sungenis, "By What Authority?" by Shea, "Eucharist" by Bouyer, "the Christian Tradition" in 5 volumes by Jaraslov Pelikan, "Common Ground" by Bajis, "The Vindication of Tradition" by Pelikan, and "The Orthodox Way" by Bishop Kallistos Ware.

Very informative and practical

This work is a classic in the field of historical theology, in which the author recounts the history of "tradition," from scriptural, patristic and medieval sources, then attempts to find the common threads that run through Church history. Congar dispels many myths and superstitions about the Catholic conception of Tradtion. Unfortunately, this work and its conclusions are largely ignored by conservatives.
