"Total Commitment" is pure fiction - but fiction based on history and ongoing political upheavals around the world. In the novel, the horrific events of September 11, 2001 have prompted a consortium of Western nations to pursue a highly-classified, very controversial initiative to cripple rogue states in their efforts to develop and utilize their weapons of mass destruction. Shortly after the Department of Homeland Security assumed control of the facilities on Plum Island in 2003, a cohort of dedicated investigators was assigned to a secure BSL-3 lab constructed for the sole purpose of developing the "perfect" biologic agent. Now, after several years, those researchers have finally produced a modified Influenza A virus which is highly contagious, can immobilize its victims for several days, and is "safe" to use on unvaccinated populations. Unfortunately, before final testing of the virus' effectiveness can be completed, Iran has acquired at least one nuclear weapon. Now there is a real possibility that the Iranians will use their own nuclear weapons before the virus can be deployed. "Total Commitment" defines the roles -some active and some passive - of several individuals who may soon experience what may be a foretaste of Armageddon. As the viral-borne pestilence spreads world-wide with total disregard for friend or foe, some of these individuals will muster the fortitude necessary to survive in a chaotic environment. Some will experience loss, grief, and even remorse. Hopefully, in the end, a modicum of salvation awaits them all.
