Mr. Kennedy has the special insight of both a Catholic within the institutional system and outside of it. As a young adult Catholic struggling to make sense of the divide between the Church-as-institution's stance on social subjects and my own conscience (shaped and formed in large part from a Catholic upbringing based on compassion, social justice and the integrity of the person), this book has spoken to me more than I expected. Mr. Kennedy shed's light on the underpinnings of the Catholic Church as institution, and his insight has allowed me to better understand the why and the how of my own Church's decisions. Like any "second culture Catholic" as Kennedy calls it, I am happy to see an intelligent, logical book in which historical fact and social context are wrapped together to give an accurate face to the American Catholic church, and it's people.
