As a professional who has been in the field of social work for many years, I found this book extremely helpful for people just starting the ACOA journey. I have reccomended the book to several clients who have struggled with growing up in an alcoholic family. My clients consistently tell me that because of the way the book is written,( as a narrative, non-fiction which takes the reader through 16 meetings of a typical ACOA group), it was easy for them to relate to and helped them identify many of their feelings. Unlike most books of this kind, Together We Heal is not a self-help text, but a self-help novel. The group members are intriguing, funny, honest, and their stories are dramatic. They talk openly about substance abuse, emotional and sexual abuse, lonliness, and unfinished business with parents and siblings. I have used the book as spring board for my indiviual sessions and for my groups. I have found it paticularly helpful in framing common issues of ACOA's such as; difficulties with relationships and self-esteem, shame, and abuse. It's easy to read, the information is easy to accsess within the text, and clients respond to it well because they are not being, "talked to", but are drawn into the group itself. For any professional in this field, it is a great book to know about, especially those working with adult children of alcoholics.
