Delightful!

To Wed A Highland Bride was a delightful read for any romantic! I couldn't put the book down and was thoroughly enthralled for the entirety of it. As a lover of faerie lore, I found that addition to the plot compelling and, needless to say, entwining that with a sultry romance made me wish the book just kept on going! I would highly recommend reading To Wed A Highland Bride, particularly if you are in the mood for a fantastic, whimsical tale.

Don't let the title fool you

Don't let the title fool you into thinking this is a typical historical romance. I loved Ms. Gabriel's balanced blend of fantasy, romance and the "career" interests of the protagonists. I especially enjoyed the way the author interjected some highland language and expressions without it overpowering the story. For me, this was a quick and delightful read. It was fun to witness James and Elspeth learning to appreciate each other's way of life, and of course, their developing romance. This story is a slightly unusual highland romance that's easy to like.

The Bane of my existence...

I'm not sure how anyone reading this story could come away with anything less than a smile...much less putting the book down unfinished as one reviewer commented. And as to "fantasy...over the top" isn't that what fantasy is? Or believing the unbeleivable? Over the top? It was very interesting to watch James, an unbeliever in anything that can't be explained with logic, argue with himself. I will say that I was somewhat disappointed though at the end after experiencing what he did, James still tried to explain things away with logic. At this point I wanted him to be a true blue 100% believer! James and Elspeth offer just enough contrast to one another to be interesting and as for the fairies in the story, all I can say is I wanted more! The history, geology, and scenery was done in such beautiful detail by Ms. Gabriel that I could see things vividly in my mind! Extrememly well done! This is my first read by Ms. Gabriel and seeing that it apparently falls under her previous two books, "Keeping Kate" and "Stealing Sophie" I intend to pick those up right away. The bane of my existence? Waiting the typical year before the next installment. And PLEASE, let it be about Lord Eldin! =)

interesting Regency romantic fantasy

In 1822 Scotland Viscount James MacCarran returns to his family home Straun House following the death of his crazy grandmother. Per her will to inherit the estate, he must complete her tome on fairy lore and marry a woman with fairy blood. A warrior more comfortable on the field of combat, he figures finishing the book will prove rather easy compared to finding a female fairy as he does not believe in the existence of the magical species. Elspeth MacArthur sprains her ankle on the Straun estate during a nasty storm. James takes her into his home to get her out of the weather, but they are alone. After the torrent ends, he escorts her back to her home where he speaks to her grandfather about marrying her because she was compromised. Her grandfather refuses to make Elspeth marry the Viscount because he understands first hand the fairy curse that hurts his family. Elspeth agrees to marry him if they can find the hidden fairy treasure that will break the curse. This is an interesting Regency romantic fantasy due to the lead couple as he finds love, but she finds a reason to reject his marital offer. The story line is entertaining, but the otherworldly elements never feel as if they belong unlike the previous magical MacCarran tale (see KEEPING KATE). Still fans will appreciate the Viscount's efforts TO WED A HIGHLAND BRIDE with fairy in her blood. Harriet Klausner
