Heart warming and fun

I thought this book was a wonderful, relaxing romance novel. I really respected the main character for her strength and independance as she struggled to be the person she wanted to be and find the happiness she wanted to feel. Each character in this book has a side to them you are completely attached to. I highly recommend this book to romantic fairy tale lovers!

My first romance, and always a treasured one!

I truly enjoyed this book! The love between Joseph and Constance is so wonderful that you won't be able to put it down! I realize some seem to dissaprove of the book's ending, but i found it just added to the romance and humor of it all! This is a romance you will remember in your heart. Don't miss this book! *especially* if you are a fan of the Victorian Era!

Entertaining!

I found To Marry A British Lord by Judith O'Brien to be her most entertaining work. I really enjoyed this tale about a woman falling in love with her soon to be husband's best friend. I had a five minute laughing fit at one part of the story which I've never experienced reading anything. When I think back on it I still get the giggles. I was also able to appreciate the mother-in-law tension. Even though this book does lose some of its' punch towards the end; it was excellent.

Just rewrite the last 50 pages in your head...

This is a lovely story - the romance develops naturally, realistically, and you cheer for the hero and heroine--both very intelligent, intrepid souls--every step of the way. For once British aristocracy is presented as they really are (febrile, inbred do-nothings, but in the best taste) and are presented with sharp wit and unerring detail. It was five-star material until the very end... If you can overlook the weak (and rather contrived, if you please) ending, this is a fine book.

This author has a talent that just keeps on growing

Due to the South's recent loss in the Civil War, Constance Lord leaves Richmond to accept a job as a governess to her English cousin's children. Nine years later, she becomes engaged to Philip Hastings, the second son of a Duke. All seems right in her new world until she meets Philip's best friend, Joseph Smith, a wealthy industrialist, who wants to help the impoverished. When Constance falls in love with Joseph, she breaks off her engagement with Philip. However, good fortune manages to elude her yet again when Joseph is accused of treason. Through an intermediary, he informs her that he does not love her. She still tries to help him regain his freedom, only to learn that he apparently has not been arrested. A heartbroken Constance leaves for New York City. Unless a miracle occurs, it appears that Constance will live her life without her beloved TO MARRY A BRITISH LORD is a very enjoyable and well written Victorian romance that readers will cherish because of the tidbits of historical authenticity. The lead characters are both charming players, especially the intrepid Constance who never allows anything or anyone to defeat her. Judith O'Brien is a rising star who adds freshness to the historical romance sub-genre. Harriet Klausner
