Heartfelt Thanks to Herbert Brokering

Miscarriage, stillbirth, death after just a few hours of life ... these are unexpected losses which throw many of our lives out of sync. Herbert Brokering, a Lutheran pastor and prolific writer, lost a grandson (Henry) within moments of Henry's birth. With gentle honesty, Brokering shares poems and "conversations" that he had with Henry soon after the unexpected death. I loved his simple conversations. Brokering voices the words so many of us say: "I didn't get to hold you long enough. There were songs I wanted to sing to you. I wanted to take you sliding." Henry responds with angelic comfort that is neither trite or untrue: "I'm here and never far from you. I love to listen to you hum. When you think of me, you are holding me." To Henry in Heaven allows parents, grandparents, and friends to be part of Brokering's intimate doubts, longings, and hopes so that the burden which can hardly be imagined is named and honored until healing begins. As a pastor, mother, and grandmother myself, I have found Brokering's book to be the balm that is needed in the very difficult situations of infant mortality.
