Very Inspiring

Monroe Mann's "To Benning and Back" is very inspiring and a great read as well. This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in better understanding the journey from citizen to Army Officer. I have read other books on this subject, but Monroe Mann's book provides the most personal insight into what one might expect to experience, and feel, while navigating through the entire process. I highly recommend this book. ENS Rick - US Navy Reserve

Well written and definitely honest...

Monroe Mann's book reminds me of my own multiple trips to Ft. Benning for Basic Combat Training, Infantry School, and Airborne School. His descriptions of life in the barracks and in the field is articulate, honest, and frequently hilarious. Highly recommended by this former 82nd trooper.

Finally some insight on whats ahead!

Upon recently being accepted into OCS for the US Army I have been constantly looking for advice, and information on what is ahead. This book sounded perfect by description and was even better than expected. A very quick read, and the day to day writings give a great perspective of whats ahead. I would also recommend this book to friends and family of potential recruits.Being someone who was not necessarily bred for the military I found Lt. Mann's perspectives on the military both refreshing and inviting. The best thing I can say about the book is that prior to reading, OCS is something I wanted more than anything in my life, after reading this book... I want it more!

This is a must read for anyone considering joining the Milit

I'm in the process of joining the reserves. This book answered many questions I had about the experience which no one else has been able to adequately answer. The text is well written in a journal format making it easy to read. I've given it to my wife to read to educate her about the process. When she is done, I'll give it to my recruiter to read so she can better prepare future recruits.

so this is the Army! Well, Basic and OCS anyway....

This book was terrific! It was easy to read (less than 4 hours), and FULL of information. Mr.Mann, I mean, LT Mann is also VERY entertaining. My first thought upon finishing the book was, "OH MY GOD I NEED TO RUN MORE." The flow of his thoughts has certainly given me a PRECIOUS inside view of BCT and OCS. I'm fairly certain his warnings will help me weather the toughest spots, from sleep deprivation to taking non-sensical seeming orders from seeming idiots. I'm sure there's a method to the madness, but whatever else, LT Mann has warned me of the madness. Give this book to those you love who are heading for BCT and OCS, and then READ IT YOURSELF. And SEND MAIL TO THEM!
